How does skin age?

• As we get older, components of our skin degenerate, especially the proteins collagen and elastin, setting the stage for the appearance of wrinkles. The breakdown of collagen and elastin, which is accelerated by sun exposure and gravity, results in sagging skin. Other factors such as stress, pollution, chemicals, tobacco smoke and alcohol rapidly increases the rate of skin-protein degeneration.

What happens then?

• While skin ages, cells begin to produce excessive amounts of free radicals which are unstable oxygen molecules.
